If you've ever owned or operated a powerboat, you're probably familiar with the trim tabs used to raise the boat's keel up, and push the bow down to help the boat plane and ride comfortably. However, in the past five to 10 years, manufacturers such as Zipwake, Humphree and Volvo QL, among others, have introduced interceptors to help better control powerboat rigging and roll. Both systems have pros and cons, so which is best for your boat?

What is an Interceptor?

In the boating world, a transom is usually a small vertical plate that is placed on the lower edge of the boat's stern or transom. The board creates additional lifting pressure under the boat, and in the event of mechanical objections, the board can be extended or retracted as needed to increase or decrease the amount of lift.

What do Tabs and Intercepts have in Common?

Boat trim tab is the fore-aft position of the boat body at different speeds. The primary purpose of trim marks and intercepts is to adjust the edges or water flow across the boat so that the hull adopts the best position for speed and ride. Simply put, both interceptors and trim tabs are intended to raise the keel and lower the bow during travel for a smoother, faster, and more fuel-efficient ride.

Trim Tabs vs Interceptors: What are the Advantages and Disadvantages?

Trim tabs for boats are common devices attached to the keel or inside the keel pocket, usually in pairs, that can raise the keel and lower the bow while pressing down at an angle into the water flowing across the keel. The sharper the angle, the greater the impact of the trim tab.

The interceptors are installed on the lowest surface of the keel, and as with the trim marks, the interceptors redirect the water flow to change the position of the keel and bow. Where they differ is that the interceptors enter the flow at approximately a right angle or vertically. The interceptors also extend only a small distance, just 30 millimeters – about one inch – in the case of the Zipwake interceptors.

Efficiency

The main advantage of the interceptor system is the small size of the blade and the speed at which it can deploy and retreat. Zipwake interceptors move from full retraction to full extension in 1.5 seconds. This is four to five times faster than trim tabs, which typically take 6 to 8 seconds. This means that when you leave port and accelerate to cruising speed, your boat will come “out of the hole” and onto the plane much faster with the interceptors.

Sensitivity and Control

The interceptors travel relatively small distances and can be adjusted in minute increments. For example, the Zipwake unit has a stroke distance of just 30mm and can be adjusted within this range by 0.5mm at a time, allowing the boat to be balanced in a finely tuned manner. There is an actual scale inside the control panel wheel that allows you to measure each increment.

In comparison, trim tabs generally move at one speed, and cannot be customized to suit the specific slope and roll needs of each different body shape.

Durability

The geometry of the cutting tongues allows for uneven force distribution which can lead to warping of the laminate and reduced on-plane stability. Interceptors, on the other hand, are resilient to extreme conditions such as barnacle growth and dings and bumps from things they might collide with in the open sea. Trim marks also make the boat difficult to control when reversing and are prone to breaking, making interceptors the perfect choice for boat owners looking for reliability, dependability and durability.

Installation cost

The installation processes for trim markers and interceptor systems are essentially the same, so the installation cost is generally similar as well. Both require mounting the tab or interceptor on the crossbar, mounting a control on the dash, and a winding cable to connect the two. This means that the labor and material costs for installation will be nearly identical.
