Boat Trailer Safety Tips - Launching Your Boat

Your journey is finally over and it's time to head out to the lake and launch your boat. Transporting your boat on your boat trailer has been relatively hassle-free up until this point and you are determined to keep it that way. To help, the tire experts at Tread World have put together some tips to make launching your boat from your trailer easier so you can safely get your boat off your boat trailer and into the water. Let the fun start.

Don't be that guy! First, prepare your boat.

Boat Trailer Safety Tips

If you're a boating enthusiast, you've no doubt driven up to the boat ramp only to find some idiot's vehicle blocking the entire ramp while he readies his boat to put it in the water. Don't be that stupid. Do not ignore boating etiquette and disturb other boating passengers. Alternatively, rig your boat before heading to the launch so you can hop in, get out and start your day on the lake!

Get your boat ready before entering the ramp area

Get everything you can done ahead of time, so when you get to the launch ramp, you're ready to put your boat in the water. Park the car near the slope. Load all of your gear into your boat – fishing gear, life jackets, snacks and drinks, skis, anything you take with you. Disconnect your boat trailer lights from your tow vehicle so you don't have to worry about hot lights popping with cold water.

Attach your dock bumpers if you have them. Remove all of your boat trailer's safety chains, ties and straps, but leave the trailer's winch line attached, if you have one. If you don't have a winch, leave one or two tie-downs to secure your boat to your boat trailer, and then attach a dock line (or two) to your boat to help you control it when it hits the water — so you don't have to jump after it as it floats away, as well as attach it to the dock . Remove the motor travel struts, if you have them. One more thing, this is important. Be sure to put the boat drain plug in place!

Now it's time to back out of the boat launch ramp

This can be challenging even for experienced boaters and you may want to practice before arriving at the public boat ramp. Position your vehicle so that it is able to back into the water directly. Pull forward enough so that the vehicle and boat trailer are aligned when you start reversing. Try to make small corrections to your steering wheel because oversteer can cause your boat trailer to sway too much, forcing you to pull forward and start over.

Remember that your trailer will sway in the opposite direction to the direction you turn the wheel. Take your time. Back up slow. Carefully back your boat and boat trailer toward and into the water so that your boat floats freely. If you have a winch, stop before you go underwater, put your vehicle in park, and apply the emergency brake. Lower and run the engine so you know it will start before you completely detach from the boat trailer. Disconnect your winch and steer your boat away from the trailer and onto the dock. Drive your boat trailer and vehicle off the ramp and find a parking spot.

Check your boat trailer tires

At each step of your trip from home to the lake and back, do a quick check of your boat trailer tires to make sure they are properly inflated to their maximum PSI (psi), because PSI that is too low or too high can It can lead to blowouts on the road. Also look for signs of wear, cracks in the tread surface, or bulges in the sidewall that may have appeared while you were on the road. The last thing you want is for your boat to become stranded, and this can happen with even the best boat trailer if you're not careful.
