How to Connect an Electric Winch Properly
Generally, to operate electric winches, they require power from the car battery. In addition, the battery can be powered separately, or through a vehicle battery with appropriate wiring, power can be supplied to the electric winch.
The recommended method for connecting your winch depends on
three things:
-Where your winch is
mounted
· --Front of the vehicle
· --The trailer/rear of the vehicle
Winch Type
- Light duty
- Medium duty
- High durability
At the front of the vehicle when installed, there are two
ways to provide power to the winch. Here they are:
Option 1: Using the Car Battery and Standard Winch Wires
·
Lift on a regular basis, recommended for light
to moderate duty.
- · Requires at least 440 amp cold cranking vehicle battery and 60 amp alternator.
Procedure
On the winch, to the positive pole, connect the power wire,
and to the negative ground post, connect the negative wire.
Now to the engine bay from the winch, run both wires. Avoid
any places where the wire can become pinched or hot areas.
Under the Cover
Using the circuit breaker on the car's battery, connect the
positive lead from the winch to the positive post. On the car battery, connect
the negative lead from the winch to the negative ground post.
When not in use, for winch removal a quick disconnect can be
added to this setting to make it convenient.
· · With the power and ground wires connected to the battery, install quick disconnects in the line.
· To operate the winch, connect the winch side wire to the battery wire on the side of the car.
· In your application, the wire gauge used is
compatible with what you purchase, and the connection breaks quickly – check
that.
Option 2: Operate the winch using an auxiliary battery
- · Recommended for frequent and medium to heavy lifters.
- · 60 amp generator and at least 440 to 660 amp cold crank, an auxiliary vehicle is required for this.
Procedure
Auxiliary Battery – The wire should be parallel to the car battery. And at 12 volts, both batteries connect to the output, check this.
Between the auxiliary battery and the vehicle battery, a
battery isolator should be installed. When operating from the auxiliary
battery, the winch only draws power, ensuring that. While using the winch, it
will drain, which will prevent the car battery from being powered. On the
auxiliary battery, from the positive post on the car battery to the positive
post is installed in line with the positive power lead being on. From the
ignition circuit by wire, the isolator is switched on.
- On the winch with a positive pole, connect the positive
wire and to the negative ground pole, connect the negative wire.
-If one of them is included with the wind, use the in-line
circuit breaker when on the auxiliary battery, from the winch to the positive
pole connect the positive wire. On the auxiliary battery, from the winch to the
negative ground post, connect the negative lead.
