The Best Camping Toilets of 2023
Forget going into the woods, take a little bit of civilization with you into the outdoors.
For some people, the turning factor towards camping is the
bathroom situation. As long as you follow Leave No Trace guidelines, all of
nature can be your bathroom, but squatting over a dug hole is outside of most
people's comfort zone. Upgrading your camping kit to include a portable toilet
could be the key to a successful camping trip, especially when nature calls
unexpectedly.
In this piece, I focused on basic portable camping toilets that have a holding tank for fresh and black water with a simple flush. I did not include composting toilets or cassettes. Below are some of the best camping toilets to consider.
Best for Small Spaces: Thetford Porta Potti 135
Main features
·
2.6 gal fresh water tank
·
2.6 gallon capacity tank
Why made the cut?
Featuring a simple and stylish design, this toilet is
compact, affordable, and easy to transport and store.
Pros
- Light weight
- One-button release for holding tank
- Seat and cover can be removed for cleaning
- Manual hand pump for washing
- One carry handle
- Elegant appearance (bottom gray/top white)
Cons
·
No level indicator
·
Low height (not standard toilet height)
Product Description
The Thetford was the most compact and lightest toilet I
tested at just under 8 pounds. It can fit into small spaces and would be
perfect for the truck or camp site.
The top of the toilet attaches to the base, which is the
tank, and with a simple one-touch lever, it can be disconnected very easily.
The catch tank has a tight-fitting valve and a pour spout that rotates for easy
emptying. The holding tank also has an air-tight intake valve, so when not in
use, you can lock in odors with a vent button to release a small amount of air
pressure inside the tank. Both (inlet and outlet) caps have gasketed caps for a
secure fit. One of the main features I love is that the toilet lid can be
closed and locked.
The total footprint of the toilet is smaller in height than
a regular toilet, rising only 12 inches off the floor. The base has a storage
area in which you can keep toilet chemicals or a small roll of toilet paper.
Bonus: The optional carrying case can be purchased for $23.
Main features
- Fresh water tank with a capacity of 2.6 gallons
- 2.6 gallon capacity tank
- Simple button flow
- Has tank level indicator
Why were the pieces
made?
For a simple camping toilet, this has most of the features,
especially the level indicator that lets you know when it's time to empty it.
Pros
· Easy to use
· No pumping
· Stream with the push of a button
· Level index
Cons
·
Costly
Product Description
Unlike other toilets, the Dometic does not require any
pumping to move water into the bowl. It has an easy-to-use one-push button to
flush out water and waste quickly and efficiently.
Another additional feature is the level indicator located on
the detention tank. With other toilets, it takes a little trial and error to
figure out when it's time to empty, but this simplifies that task.
The packaging is extremely sturdy and well-made of
high-strength ABS plastic, so long-term durability is another plus. It weighs
12 pounds empty, so it's still one of the best camping toilets for portability
and especially great for longer periods at base camp.
